WEEK 9 - Development of radiography

Week 9

Pops of colour in the sea of blue

Week nine started with Cath lab. The modality I was the most looking forward to. During my first day I discovered that the equipment is the same I've used in Finland. I was able to see a couple of different procedures regarding grafting and angioplasty. My role as a student feels quite restricted compared to Finland and most of the time I was quietly following the procedures. It was a wonderful learning experience and I really enjoyed the procedures I got to see. These included ECHOs, mapping of electricity in the heart and angioplasties.

Week 9 could also be called the library week because I spent many evenings studying there with the other students. Cardiac imaging course has a lot of materials and I don't really know what to expect in the MCQ. I overheard some Irish students say the exam will be quite difficult so I am a bit worried.

My friend got quite sick and we ended up spending a lot of time at SVUH. Clinical placement ended on Thursday and on Friday night we were back for a CT-scan that revealed sher had a stone in the appendix. We waited 26 hours just for a bed and in the end they kicked me out when patients started pouring in.

Development of Radiography

I didn’t have any Irish students in my group so my comparison between Finland and Ireland is minimal. I can include my experiences from clinical placement where I observed Ireland’s sonographer practise. I found out that radiographers role in ultrasound is a lot more prominent over here compared to Finland. Sonographers being able to perform different ultrasound scans and do it as their main job. In Finland doctors’ opinion on sonographers is still quite negative so we have a long way to go. I feel that Ireland and the UK are the two leading pro-sonographer countries.
